Back to School Message from the Superintendent

Welcome back and what a great first week!  Teachers, support staff and administrators are excited about every student’s educational journey in the 2018/19 school year.  We understand and embrace the role we play in the lives of the students we serve each day.  I believe your family is excited about this school year as evidenced by the huge turnouts for Open House at all schools.  Your support and partnership plays a vital role in the educational success of your child.

Our academic initiatives for this year will stimulate innovative thinking and provide students with the skills to tackle real-world problems.  The ultimate goal of the Ashe County Board of Education is to ensure that all students graduate career and college ready and be successful in life.  The initiatives can be found on our web site for your review.  Videos on our 2018/19 theme and a message to students may be found on my web page.  Visit www.asheschools.org click on District, then Superintendent.

Communication is one of the key components to success.  Our website has been revised to provide necessary information to all stakeholders in a user-friendly format.  We are also continuing our efforts with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to highlight the positive happenings throughout our school district and at each school.  I encourage you to utilize every avenue we provide to maintain a positive level of communication with your respective school and especially with your child’s teacher.

Each year brings positive change.  We have new additions to our teaching and support staff at each of the schools—all of these folks bring a solid skill set to their area of expertise.  The Maintenance Department has worked on numerous projects to update our facilities.  Many safety features have been installed as a result of last year’s district-wide safety and security committee.  This committee will continue its work in 2018/19 as the Board of Education takes the safety of our students and staff very seriously.  The Transportation Department worked diligently this summer servicing all buses to ensure that they are safe for travel.  Professional development activities were made available to teachers throughout the summer.  Principals put a great deal of time and effort into the process of student placement.  Classrooms have been balanced academically and socially to provide the best environment to meet your child’s needs.  This is the opening year of the Ashe Early College High School.  This new initiative allows students to receive a high school diploma and an associate degree, or up to two years of college credit, by taking a mixture of high school and college classes.  Finally, progress continues on the construction of a new middle school—plans are to break ground in the Spring of 2019.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve your child and this community.  We appreciate the important role we play in the future of your children.  Working together we can make this school year one of growth and achievement.

    Thank you—Superintendent Phyllis Yates
